WhatsApp Channels — the one-way broadcast feeds that sit in the Updates tab beside Status — arrived in September and were adopted quickly: news outlets, cricket boards, celebrities and government offices all opened one, and many users follow a dozen or more. That created the usual problem. The channels you actually read scroll away beneath the ones that post most, and finding last week’s important message from a specific channel means hunting. The fix WhatsApp is testing is the obvious one: pin channels.
What the feature does
According to WABetaInfo, which tracks WhatsApp’s test builds, Android beta version 2.24.4.3 adds a pin icon for channels. Pinned channels stay at the top of the Updates tab regardless of how recently they posted, so a chosen few are always one tap away and their earlier messages easy to return to. It mirrors the pinning that has existed for chats for years. Only beta users can see it for now; the assumption, given WhatsApp’s pattern, is that a public release follows in a coming version.
What Channels gained recently
WhatsApp has been adding to the format steadily since launch: voice updates, so a channel can post audio; polls, so it can ask its followers questions; and a larger number of admins per channel, so a newsroom or an organisation can share the posting. Pinning is the first change aimed at readers rather than publishers.
Why it matters here
In Bangladesh the format has found an audience faster than almost anywhere. WhatsApp is on most smartphones, Facebook pages are noisy and algorithmically filtered, and a channel delivers a message to every follower, in order, without a feed deciding whether they see it. Newspapers use channels for breaking news; the cricket board and the education boards use them for results and notices; local businesses use them as a mailing list that people actually open. For a follower of ten such channels, pinning the exam board and the news outlet above the shop offers is exactly the control that was missing.
How to try it now
Join the WhatsApp beta on Google Play (search for WhatsApp, scroll to “Join the beta”), update, and long-press a channel in the Updates tab to see whether the pin option has reached your account; rollout within the beta is gradual. Everyone else should see it in a regular update over the next few weeks.
