Dhaka’s computer markets in late February: students are buying laptops, not desktops — and this is what the parts cost

A week of stable prices in Dhaka’s computer markets, with one clear trend: student buyers are choosing laptops over building desktops. Current prices for processors, RAM, SSDs, graphics cards and monitors, and a note on why the desktop still wins on price per performance.

Dhaka’s computer markets in late February: students are buying laptops, not desktops — and this is what the parts cost

Traders in Dhaka’s computer markets say the same thing this week: the buyers coming through the door are students, and they are asking for laptops. Desktop component prices have not moved, so nothing is pushing them away from building a machine — they simply want something that goes to campus, to the tutoring job and back to the hostel. A stable market with good sales across other products is the summary; the interesting part is the price list.

The laptop-or-desktop question

For a student who needs portability, a laptop is the right answer and the market agrees. For anyone who works at one desk, the numbers above still favour building: a Ryzen 5 5600G, 16 GB of RAM, a 500 GB NVMe drive and a 22-inch monitor come to roughly Tk 45,000 with a case and power supply — the price of a mid-range laptop with half the screen and no upgrade path.
