The warning matters far beyond Reddit. Referral traffic from search is the business model of almost every site on the open web.

Reddit fell 29% after warning that Google’s AI search is cutting the referral traffic it depends on

Reddit’s stock fell 29% on Friday after the company reported weaker-than-expected daily user figures and warned that Google’s growing AI-driven search was hurting the referral traffic it depends on.

Coming in the same week that Alphabet lost $500bn for saying its AI answers were eating its own advertising, the two statements fit together into one claim: the mechanism by which search engines sent visitors to websites is weakening, and the companies on both ends of it now say so in public filings.

Why Reddit specifically

Reddit is unusually exposed, for a reason worth spelling out. A very large share of its traffic arrives from people searching for a practical question and landing on a years-old thread where somebody answered it — the “best budget phone under 20,000” and “why is my router doing this” class of query.

That is precisely the class of question an AI summary answers best, because the answer already exists in text and only needs restating. So the better the summary gets, the less reason there is to click through. Reddit’s content is also, awkwardly, among the material those summaries are built from: the company licenses its archive to AI firms, which means it is being paid for the input that reduces its traffic.

The exposure is general, not specific

Almost every site on the open web is funded the same way. A reader searches, arrives, sees an advertisement or becomes a subscriber. Remove the arrival and the funding goes with it, regardless of how good the writing is.

The zero-click figure we reported earlier this month — around three in four Google searches ending without anyone leaving the results page — is the same phenomenon measured from the network side. Reddit is simply the first company large enough, and dependent enough, to have to state the consequence to its shareholders.

What a publisher here can actually do about it

Not much about the search engine, and quite a lot about the dependency. Three things separate the sites that survive this from the ones that do not.

A direct audience. Readers who arrive by name — through an app, a newsletter, a WhatsApp or Facebook channel, a bookmark — are not mediated by anyone’s algorithm. Building that list is slow and it is the only durable asset.

Work a summary cannot replace. A paragraph restating a specification is trivially summarisable. An original price survey, an interview, a local test, a document nobody else has — these are reasons to visit, because the AI has nothing to summarise until somebody does the reporting.

Revenue that is not per-pageview. Sponsorship, services, events and memberships all survive a traffic fall that display advertising does not.

The bargain publishers were offered, and what replaced it

For twenty-five years the arrangement was implicit but clear: a search engine indexed your pages for free, and in exchange it sent you readers. Nobody signed anything, but both sides understood the trade, and the entire economics of the open web was built on it.

An AI summary keeps the first half and drops the second. The page is still read by the crawler; the reader no longer arrives. Cloudflare has put the asymmetry in numbers — crawl-to-referral ratios of roughly six to one for Google, far wider for AI-only crawlers — and that ratio is the clearest single measure of how the bargain has changed.

Which is why licensing deals like Reddit’s are the shape of what comes next, and why they favour the large. A platform with a billion archived answers can negotiate; a site with four hundred articles cannot.
